MY COACHES
Growing up, I had the same coach from age 5 to 13, which is really rare. Coach Carrie was instrumental in my career. Having a brother at home so close in age to me, my mom and dad were always telling me to just "Do your own thing. You don't always have to compete with each other." Coach Carrie, on the other hand, taught me the value in being competitive. When it was time to run hill sprints, she'd say that the first one up the hill didn't have to do it again. That motivated me, big time. And she gave me the ability to play a ton of different positions, which was exciting and different and got me to understand my strengths and my passions.
Then, the coach I had at my first Emerald City team—my first premier club, Coach Amanda, changed the game entirely for me. The year I met her I actually made the B team, but within 5 months was moved up to the A team because of the things she told me to do. She saw me at tryouts and said she wanted me on her team because I had a ton of raw talent. I had never played premier before, and this was going to be a step up, so she wanted to make sure that I got the best opportunity I could to play for the first team. I told her I wanted to play professionally, and DO THIS. She said, "Game on: let's do this, then."
Her ability to foster that belief in me almost instantly and the way she commanded so much respect from her players was phenomenal. She knew the game really well and really understood what particular aspects of my game I could improve upon and pinpointed them. And I know for sure that set me up for huge success further on.
One of the most influential and positive forces in my life entered at age 10 when I began my yearly visits to Colleen Hacker Success Soccer Camp ran from a local field in Tacoma, Washington. Coach Colleen is a gold-medal winning olympic sports psychologist, soccer coach, psychology professor, and one of the best humans I know. I spent 8 years as a player in her camp, and was fortunate enough to be invited back as a coach the year after I "graduated." I coached for 3 years before my soccer career took me outside the country. I learned some of the most valuable lessons from that camp: humility, positive energy, leadership, and how to build others on your team up to the standard YOU want. These skills have been invaluable to me as I navigate my way through the professional game of soccer. I am filled with gratitude for Coach Colleen and her entire staff who have such positive impacts on the world.
